Pack 60 Pinewood Derby 2012
Friday, January 27 5PM Veteran's
Hall, Spreckels
The
Pinewood Derby in January has been one of the most popular events for many years. The Derby now includes over 60 boys. Rules and procedures
are in place so that scouts may enjoy this event.
Expectations
The Pinewood Derby is an event for the
boys in Pack 60. The primary purpose of this competition is to teach the boys
how to work with wood and tools and to be proud of their work. Although scouts need, and should have,
adult supervision and assistance, the cars are not supposed to be a competition
between the parents. The boys are acutely aware of what is fair, and what is
not. Therefore, it is very important that everyone follow the rules below.
Rules
Pinewood
Derby car kits are distributed by pack 60 at the December Caroling event. Pinewood
cars must be made from the scouting kits provided by the pack. Non scout
manufactured derby kits that include solid axles or precut cars are not allowed.
Acceptable materials and dimensions of
completed cars:
Made
using wood, wheels, and axles from the kits.
The
scout office has accessories, colored wheels and decorating kits available for
purchase.
Weight:
5 ounces (will be adjusted at weigh-in so that all cars are the same weight).
Width:
2-3/4 “
Maximum
length: 7”
Feel
free to add decorations (e.g. plastic drivers) as long as the rules above are
not violated.
Use
only dry graphite lubricant
on the wheels.
Use
the precut grooves on the wood block to place the axels, do not cut new grooves
to lengthen the distance
between
them (do not lengthen the wheel base).
*Note: Most scouts will need help nailing wheels to their cars.
*Note: Most scouts will need help nailing wheels to their cars.
Car
numbers have been assigned by the Committee Chair. Ask your den leader if you
don't know your number.
The
assigned car numbers should be clearly visible on the hood of the car.
The
bottom of each car will be marked in indelible ink during the weigh-in.
Weigh-In
All
cars must be submitted at the “weigh-in” on Wednesday, January 25th, 2012. Weigh-in times will be posted on the pack
blog. During the weigh-in, the cars will be officially inspected and weighed by
the Volunteer Fire Department. Cars that are too heavy or too light will have
their weight adjusted by drilling and adding lead weight if needed. A
designated leader will keep the cars until the night of the derby (Friday, January 27, 2012). No
cars may be submitted following the weigh-in.
Awards
The
Volunteer Fire Department will judge the races and all awards. Their decisions
are final.
Volunteers
from Boy Scout Troop 60 will keep score using a system that keeps each boy
racing
as long as possible. Our track's precision computer scoring system will
indicate which car has won the race. The cumulative score of the races
determines the winners and if cars are eligible for the final pack race.
Racing Trophies, Medals and Activity Patches
Racing Trophies (for speed) will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the Pack
Finals.
Derby
medals will be awarded for each scout rank (tiger, wolf, bear, webelos1 and webelos2).
Creative,
unusual, or cool designs, scout craftsmanship, unique paint jobs, or
originality may be recognized with derby medals at the discretion of the
Volunteer Fire Department. Additionally, each cub rank will be awarded a 1st,
2nd and 3rd place medal for speed.
