Pinewood Derby Race & Fundraiser Dinner 1/29/10 5:30-9pm RSVP BEFORE 1/25

We will be serving dinner at the Pinewood Derby race from 5:30 - 7:30.

We'll be serving pizza, hot dogs, drinks and dessert! It will be reasonably priced and we can accept cash or personal checks. This is our last fundraiser of the year so be sure to RSVP to your Den Leader before January 25 if you plan to attend & eat dinner.

As a special bonus, we'll have a second track so that parents and siblings can make their own cars to race that night. This will be for fun, so no need to weigh-in or register your cars...just come race and enjoy the fun!

Pack 60: 2010 Pinewood Derby Rules

Background
The Pinewood Derby in January has been one of Pack 60’s most important and popular events for many years. In 2003, the event grew to include 60 boys; many more than had participated before. Our traditional, somewhat haphazard approach failed to handle the larger group well. In order to avoid delays and confusion during racing we collected the cars at the weigh-in three days before the event. This allowed the Fire Company to have everything set up for the Pinewood Derby before the boys arrived, and helped us to have a much smoother and enjoyable event. We intend to follow the same procedures this year, with all cars collected at the weigh-in on 1/27/10. The Pinewood Derby itself will occur on Friday, 1/29/10.
Expectations
The Pinewood Derby is an event for the boys in Pack 60. The primary purpose of this competition is to teach the boys how to work with wood and tools and to be proud of their work. Although Tigers, Wolves and some Bears need, and should have, adult supervision and assistance, the cars are not supposed to be a competition between the parents. The boys are acutely aware of what is fair, and what is not. Therefore, it is very important that the boys use only standard wheels and lubricants, that the cars have the prescribed width, and that the cars be submitted complete at the weigh-in.
Rules and Procedures
• Pinewood Derby car kits were distributed at the December Christmas Caroling Event. Den leaders have extras for those boys who miss this event.
• The cars should be made from the kits provided by the pack. In particular, Pinewood Derby kits that include solid axles are not acceptable.
• Acceptable materials and dimensions of completed cars:
o Made using wood, wheels, and axles from the kits.
o Weight: 5 ounces (will be adjusted so that all cars are the same weight).
o Width: 2-3/4 “
o Maximum length: 7”
o Ok to add decorations (e.g. plastic drivers) as long as other rules are not violated.
o Use only dry graphite lubricant on the wheels.
o Use the grooves cut into the wood block to place the axels, do not cut new grooves to lengthen the distance between them (do not lengthen the wheel base).
• Den leaders will assign car numbers to their boys. The assigned car numbers should be clearly visible from the top/front. The car numbers will also be marked on the car bottoms in indelible ink at the weigh-in.
• The cars will be submitted at a “weigh-in” on January 27. The cars will be officially inspected and weighed. Cars that are too heavy or too light will have their weight adjusted by drilling and the addition of lead.
• A designated Pack leader will keep the cars until the night of the derby.
• No cars may be submitted following the weigh-in.
• The Pinewood Derby is scheduled for January 29.
• The Fire Company will judge the races and all awards. Their decisions are final.
• Volunteers from Boy Scout Troop 60 will keep score using a system that keeps each boy racing until the end (this is different from the double elimination scheme used in the past). Their decisions are final.
Trophies will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in the Pack. Medals will be awarded for best design, best paint job, and for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each den.
